H.R.N.B Moving Along Toward March Start

01/28/09 - Scott Waddell

Horse Racing New Brunswick Moving Along

New Brunswick will be led in 2009 by a new group, Horse Racing New Brunswick and information and updates are starting to surface from the groups first President, Jamie Hachey.

This week, race dates were one of the topics that were commented on including a big change forthcoming for this year’s racing schedule.

Saint John will see forty-three cards in total this coming year with the first scheduled for March 7th. Saint John’s schedule is actually decreasing this year while tracks in Fredericton and Woodstock will see an increase.

One major change this year will see Sunday racing at the Saint John track. This will be an experiment that the new group is hoping will increase the live handle. Hachey states that having the flea market going on in the next building could be one way to increase traffic watching and wagering on live racing.

Woodstock will also now race four race cards including a single date in June. This will take place the same weekend a major concert is taking place in nearby Fredericton. Fair week in the scenic town will now include three race days.

Meanwhile, Fredericton has been increased to twenty-one cards over the 2009 racing season and will race the traditional holiday Monday in May. They will wind up the racing season on Thursday, October 1st. One major change is that the track will experiment with Thursday night racing.

While race dates seem to have been solidified, word still awaits on leasing finalization with the tracks, hiring of a C.E.O, a job fair that is to take place, and if racing will be on schedule for the March 7th launch. Word is expected sometime in February on qualifiers and when they will take place top prepare horses for the racing meet.
